Fraudster Busted for Fake Debt Review Removal Promises

Get Out of Debt Review’ Scam Exposed

Scam offers claiming to help you ‘get out of debt review’ are everywhere online. They often follow a familiar pattern:

  • You click on a social media post and share your details.
  • A person contacts you, promising to remove the debt review flag from your record—sometimes even claiming they can get you access to credit again.
  • They ask for an upfront fee, which can range from R5 000 to R20 000.
  • They promise fast results, luring people who are desperate to clear their names.
  • Once you pay, they either vanish completely or return with excuses, saying the process failed but offering another ‘solution’—which, of course, costs even more money.
Important: It is illegal to charge upfront fees for altering credit records. Fees can only be requested after services are successfully completed. If someone asks for money upfront, it’s likely a scam.

Fraudulent Debt Review Exit Scheme Exposed

The National Credit Regulator (NCR) recently took down one such scammer. This fraudster was using fake court orders, falsified bank letters, and bogus updates on the NCR and credit bureau systems to trick the system into clearing consumer records.

After investigating, the NCR presented the case to the National Consumer Tribunal. The result was a R25 000 fine, there must now be a full audit to help affected consumers get their money back, and a total ban on the scammer operating in the industry.

Debt counsellors are very happy to see such a scammer get caught red handed and their victims get some help.

Stay Alert for Scams

If you ever get a call or see an online offer claiming to remove your debt review status without settling your debts, be cautious. The best course of action is to speak directly with your registered debt counsellor. They can guide you on managing your finances and paying off your debts faster.

Stay safe and don’t fall for scammers!
